A majority of people believe that the Wright Brothers invented the aeroplane. However, that is not true. It was an Indian instructor, Shivkar Bapuji Talpade, who invented the plane.

The Wright Brothers were the ones who created the first aeroplane in the world in 1903. Their aeroplane was called ‘Wright Flyer.’ However, the idea of an aeroplane, or any object heavier than air flying in the sky, existed before Wright Brothers. It was the Indian instructor Shivkar Bapuji Talpade who introduced the world to aeroplanes. The idea of an aeroplane belonged to Talpade. So technically, the Wright Brothers only made the first aeroplane, while Talpade invented the aeroplane eight years before.

Satya Pal Singh, the former police commissioner of Mumbai, says, “Why students are not taught that before the Wright brothers, an Indian called Shivkar Bapuji Talpade was the first to invent the aeroplane? This person invented the plane eight years before the Wright brothers. Are our students taught these things in IITs or not? They should be.”

The Wright brothers, emboldened by the success of their 1902 glider, were determined to create the aeroplane rather than simply add to the growing corpus of aeronautical knowledge. Nonetheless, they were aware that tremendous effort would be required, particularly in the construction of a propulsion system. Throughout the spring and summer of 1903, they were preoccupied with clearing the final hurdle into history.
